System marks, sorts test
pieces into three categories
System provides real-time measurement for ERW
Xiris manufactures the Radian 2000i, a
measurement system designed for ERW
tube and pipe mills to measure six critical
variables: V angle, mismatch, edge presentation, seam roll, gap, and inclination.
According to the manufacturer, the
system reduces downtime by improving
setup in the forming area, minimizing
buckling in the line, and providing early
warnings about equipment wear; reduces
waste by reducing the amount of raw
material required during setup of the V
angle, forming, and weld testing; reduces
scrap by allowing faster reactions
to defect-causing disturbances during
production; and enables overall process
optimization by SPC and data collection.
The sensor head sits between the last
fin pass rollers and the induction coil. A
combination of fast image processing,
The EDDYCHEK® 5 is a fully automatic,
nondestructive eddy current testing system
from Prüftechnik NDT GmbH that provides two-channel testing for manufacturing tube, pipe, bar, and wire. It can use
segment coils or encircling coils and
performs full-body or weld seam testing. It
marks defects, sorts inspected parts into
three categories, and generates several
types of test report for product quality certification. It sorts according to flaw density and flaw category in combination with
acceptable length and compiles them into
three levels: test piece (or section for
continuous applications), batch, and shift.
The touchscreen allows parameter
setup and lets the operator control testing
and printing; a control knob allows
changes to a parameter after it is selected.
• The unit’s XY display allows the signal amplitude to be evaluated with up to
three circular masks. If the angle of the signal is important, sector masks can differentiate between signals of differing angles.
• The rotating display shows the position of the defect on the circumference of
the test piece; the horizontal axis of the
display shows the angle in degrees on the
test piece.
• The amplitude-time display shows
defect signals along the length of the
tested material as the material moves
down the line.
It is suitable for continuous production
with cutoff or without cutoff. It also
performs offline testing of cut lengths. It
can handle cold-forming applications
using stop-and-go testing from 0.3 to
40,000 FPM depending on type of
production and test coil. The maximum
offline speed is 3,900 FPM.
The unit meets many international
standards, such as those established by
ASTM, API, BS, JIS, ETTC, ENEL, DIN,
and SEP 1925/1917/1914.
high-resolution imaging, and precise laser
line projection provides a continuous
stream of information. The manufacturer’s
LaserVision™ software package allows
measurement of process variables down
to 25 µm.
The system has two data logs: an
error-reporting log for out-of-tolerance
measurements and a job log that records
all production data. An offline SPC tool
allows managers to run simulations.
Variants include the 2000-15, which
has a 15-mm (0.59-in.) field of view; the
2000-40, which has a 40-mm (1.57-in.)
field of view; and the 2000-100, which has
a 100-mm ( 3.94-in.) field of view.
