Fabricator reduces part
handling, improves consistency
with combination bender
machine.

Full Vision Inc., a manufacturer of components and equipment for the off-road
industry, had to get over a hurdle in
making roll-over protection systems
(ROPS) and falling-object protection
structures (FOPS). For some ROPS and
FOPS designs, it needed several
machines, which led to too much part
handling and excess scrap. A combination rotary draw and push bender
allows the company to make a complete part with one setup on one
4 Editor’s Angle
A fight to the death
Some thought the day would never come, but it did—the end of
the printed edition of the venerable Encyclopedia Britannica.
Published in Scotland 1768-1900, and in the U.S. since then, it is
probably one of the most-recognized titles in the English language.
Encyclopedia Britannica Inc. can be proud of its traditional place in
the world, but pride and tradition can’t stop the onslaught of technology. The introduction of the World Wide Web in 1991 forever
changed the publishing game. Is this just another lost round a fight
to the death? Not necessarily. Editor Eric Lundin discusses print’s
role in an increasingly electronic world.

20 MATERIAL HANDLING
Service center gets
new set of wheels
When Tioga Pipe Supply Co. Inc. built
a new facility in Easton, Pa., it leveraged its 60 years in business to design
its new building. It planned the new
facility, 150,000 sq. ft. under one roof
and 10 acres of outdoor storage area, around the use of
sideloading lift trucks. The only drawback was occasional
damage to the fork trucks' guide rollers. Learn how the
lift truck manufacturer solved this problem.
22 WELDING
Cup walking on stainless
steel tube, pipe
Cup walking, a tube or pipe gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) technique
suitable for some stainless steels, can
improve weld quality. The method
involves resting the torch’s cup on the
workpiece and making a weaving
motion across the weld joint. Done
properly, it also reduces operator
fatigue and can improve weld speeds.
26 TECH TALK
When a cylinder
won’t move
A stuck hydraulic or pneumatic
cylinder, whether it’s in a bending,
forming, or cutting machine, can
be a real hassle. If it’s an electrical
problem, you might think tracing
the circuit is a bit mysterious, but
tracking down the problem doesn’t have to be an
overwhelming task. Many modern machine circuits
have LED indicators, so a little knowledge and a
voltmeter can make troubleshooting a breeze.
