A FIGHT TO THE DEATH
“In this corner, weighing in at 128
pounds, is the reigning champion,
the print edition of the
Encyclopedia Britannica. And in
this corner, weighing nothing at
all, is the contender, the digital version of the Encyclopedia
Britannica.” If you keep up with
the news, you’re already aware who won
that fight. It was announced
on March 15 that the iconic reference
set would no longer be printed. With the
creation of the World Wide Web in 1991
or so, it was only a matter of time before
publishers felt the heat. Other technologies,
mainly wireless Internet capability (Wi-Fi)
and telephones or tablets that can tap
into wireless networks, accelerated the
spread of free information available
anywhere, anytime. A set of encyclopedias,
hardly portable at 128 pounds, didn’t
stand a chance.
Is this the end of Encyclopedia
Britannica Of course not. It has kept up
with the times. It rolled out a DVD edition
in 2006, has apps for the iPhone® and
iPad®, runs seven Web sites, and maintains
a presence in various social media outlets.
According to Wikipedia (yes, yes, I used
Wikipedia to do research on Encyclopedia
Britannica Inc.), more than 60 percent of
its revenues come from its Web sites.
Does the demise of the printed version
of the encyclopedia make me, the editor
of a printed journal, nervous? No. Most
publishers have been relying on the
Internet to augment their print activities
for years; my employer, FMA
Communications Inc., has been bulking up
its Web site since 2000 or so. If you’re reading this, you rely on the printed version of
TPJ, but if you want to look up an old article or do some research on a particular
topic, you don’t have to rummage through
a big stack of old issues, searching for the
proverbial needle in a haystack. Log on to
www.thefabricator.com, click on
Article Archive, then Advanced
Search, enter a word or phrase in
the text search box, and go to
town. The site has quite a trove
of information, totaling more
than 8,000 articles and press
releases (company news and
product news, that is) from The FABRICATOR®, STAMPING Journal®, Practical
Welding Today®, and TPJ. If you’re north
of the border you might also want to check
out Canadian Industrial Machinery®
( www.cimindustry.com),
and if you’re more comfortable
with Spanish, The FABRICATOR®
en Español articles are online at
www.thefabricator.com/espanol/articulos.
Our Web site also has all of the buyers’
guides we print and a few that we don’t.
TPJ is much more than words on paper.
It’s affiliated with the Tube & Pipe
Association International®, which has been
working with the International Tube
Association to organize Pipe & Tube
Nashville 2012, June 26-28. Our three
conference goals are the same as our
magazine goals—education, education,
education!—but conferences have at least
three advantages: question-and-answer sessions after each presentation, roundtable
discussions, and networking opportunities
to meet potential customers and suppliers.
The organizing committee has pulled
together content on tube and pipe production (welded and seamless), annealing,
fabricating, and … well, you should go to
www.pipetubeconf.com/nashville for all
the information.
See you in Nashville!

Statement of Policy
TPJ–The Tube & Pipe Journal’s objective is to disseminate new and
complete information relating to the producing and fabricating of
metal tube and pipe. The main editorial text consists of articles and
news releases designed to assist owners, managers, manufacturing
engineers, supervisors, and foremen in the evaluation of new methods
and techniques. The policy of the publisher is to be nonpartisan, favoring
no one product or company. The representations of facts and opinions
expressed in the articles are those of the author and are not necessarily
endorsed by the publisher and this journal. By including information on
new products, new literature, and industry news, etc., this impartiality is
strived for and extends to the mention of trade names. Unless product
identification makes reference unavoidable, the generic name is used
when feasible. We acknowledge that on occasion there may be oversights or errors. The editors regret such oversights and re-emphasize
their policy to be impartial at all times. The publisher reserves the right
to refuse advertising it deems inappropriate for publication in TPJ–The
Tube & Pipe Journal, including ads for classes of products and services
not considered of significant interest to the readership.
